July 23: Signs and Facades

Today was all about signs and facades.  Once I figure out my notes, I'll tell you more about these images.

A "han" is an enclosed market for a specific type of merchandise or commodity.

Yeniceri = Janissary.

This was originally the Sugar (Seker)  Han.

Note the Evil Eye -- it's everywhere.  I've been told that if an evil eye breaks, it means you've been protected from bad fortune.  Just like seatbelts, which also have to be replaced after an accident.  (I think this was Clara's analogy.)

Even the Post Office has a museum.  No photographs were allowed, but they had free postcards... and you know how much teachers enjoy free stuff!

An Armenian architect.

I decided it was time to look down instead of up; this is a manhole cover.

 A man carrying plants on his back.

This small mosque was built in the same style as the post office next to it...at the same time and intentionally.

Part of an aqueduct.

Ataturk Boulevard.  Does that count for Ataturk Bingo?
